Here are some tips from the Humane Society of Greater Dayton:

Create an emergency plan for animals. This plan should include information about your pet, such as their name, breed and any special needs. It should also include a list of emergency contacts, such as a veterinarian, a local animal shelter, and a friend or family member who can care for your pet if you are unable to.

Make sure your pet is microchipped. Microchips are a permanent form of identification that can help reunite your pet with you if they get lost.

Keep your pet indoors during inclement weather. If you must go outside with your pet, keep it on a leash and make sure it wears a collar with an identification tag.

Provide a safe place for your pet during a thunderstorm. It can be a box, a basement, or an interior room without windows.

Make sure your pet has enough food and water. In the event of a power outage, you may not have access to your pet's usual source of food and water.

Have a first aid kit for your pet. This kit should include items such as bandages, antiseptic wipes and pain relievers.

In addition to these tips, here are some other things you can do to protect your pets during extreme weather:

Pay attention to signs of heat stroke and cold stress. Heat stroke is a serious illness that can be fatal for pets. Signs of heat stroke include excessive breathing, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. Cold stress is a condition that can also be fatal for pets. Signs of cold stress are shivering, lethargy and weakness.

Never leave your pet in a parked car. Even on a clear day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise to dangerous levels very quickly.

Make sure your pet's vaccinations are up to date. This will help protect them from diseases that may be more common during and after extreme weather events.

By following these tips, you can keep your pets safe during extreme weather.
