In April, Hub71 announced its first-ever program dedicated to decarbonizing technologies, selecting five startups focused on sectors from energy to aquaculture. "The climate agenda is critical for the UAE leadership," said Ahmad Ali Alwan, CEO of Hub71. This initiative reflects the UAE's commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, supported by major investments in renewable energy and carbon capture technologies.

The role of innovation

About 20 of the 220 startups in Hub71 are focused on sustainability and climate technologies. With targeted support, this number is expected to grow. The latest cohort includes Swedish startup Graphmatech, whose graphene technology promises to boost the sustainability of the hydrogen industry.

Despite its dependence on oil, which accounts for 46% of the economy, Abu Dhabi is laying the foundations for a diversified and sustainable economic future. Patricia Keating of PwC Middle East highlights the city's strategic focus on sustainable growth, supported by venture capital, investment funds and supportive regulation.

Companies such as Adnoc and Siemens Energy are supporting the Hub71 program, potentially turning the UAE into a testing ground for advanced climate technologies.
