Study shows wild fish can recognize people by their clothing

A groundbreaking study has shown that wild fish can distinguish people by their clothing. Researchers have found that European bream (Abramis brama) can identify and follow a particular diver wearing a unique wetsuit in exchange for food. This challenges the long-held belief that fish have limited cognitive abilities.

How fish see people

Fish don’t see the world the way we do. The clarity of the water, the refraction of light, and the contrast of colors affect how they distinguish objects. While some species rely heavily on movement and shape, others, like bream, seem to recognize certain visual details, including patterns on clothing.

The experiment

A team of researchers led by marine biologist Dr. Anna Laskova and behavioral ecologist Dr. Thomas Rivera conducted a controlled experiment in a freshwater lake. They trained a group of bream to associate a diver in a blue wetsuit with a food reward. The fish then ignored other divers wearing other colors and consistently followed the blue one.

“We initially thought that fish were responding to movement patterns, but our tests confirmed that color plays an important role in recognition,” Dr. Laskova explained.

What this means for fish perception

The results suggest that fish may have more advanced visual memory and learning abilities than previously thought. This has implications for fisheries, conservation efforts, and even how recreational divers interact with aquatic wildlife.

“Angling has long claimed that fish can recognize them,” said seasoned angler Mark Jensen. “I’ve always felt that my regular catch reacts differently when I wear a bright jacket instead of my usual camouflage.”

Water clarity – Clearer water provides better visual recognition, while murky water can obscure detail.

Repetitive exposure – Fish are more likely to recognize people they encounter frequently.

“These results challenge long-held assumptions about fish intelligence,” said Dr. Rivera. “Recognizing individuals suggests a level of memory retention and learning capacity that is largely unaccounted for.”
