According to the study, the ice sheets that covered vast areas of the planet during past ice ages exerted enormous pressure – several thousand kilograms per square metre. As they advanced and retreated, they carved deep valleys, changed the direction of rivers, and even altered ocean currents.

“Glaciers are nature’s most effective sculptors,” says Dr. Emily Rogers, an oceanographer who specializes in paleoclimate research. “The weight and movement of ice sheets have left permanent marks on the Earth’s landforms, from fjords to submerged ocean plateaus.”

The role of ice in marine ecosystems

As glaciers scraped away land, they carried sediment and nutrients into the oceans, creating a rich environment that nurtured marine biodiversity. The melting ice also contributed to rising sea levels, changing coastal habitats.

“The density of the ice, around 917 kg/m³, allowed these massive glaciers to displace huge volumes of water as they melted, influencing global sea levels and ocean circulation patterns,” explains Professor Daniel Hayes, an expert in oceanography.

Understanding the impact of ancient glaciers helps scientists predict future changes in ocean systems. With the current ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica melting at an alarming rate, the lessons of the past provide crucial insights into sea level rise and climate change.

“The legacy of ancient glaciers is still evident on the ocean floor and in coastal ecosystems,” says Dr Rogers. “By studying these past events, we can better understand the challenges our oceans face today.”
