Discovery of Ancient Phanagoria Jewish Quarter: A Window into History

Recent archaeological discoveries have shed light on the extensive Jewish heritage of the ancient city of Phanagoria, located on Russia’s Taman Peninsula near the Black Sea. Known as one of the oldest Greek settlements, Phanagoria has revealed extraordinary connections to Jewish history dating back to the first century BC.

World’s Oldest Synagogue Discovered

In 2023, archaeologists discovered one of the world’s oldest synagogues, likely built during the Second Temple period. Although the synagogue was destroyed in the sixth century, the synagogue’s ruins include menorahs, altars, and 58 copper coins that provide a glimpse into its illustrious past.

The synagogue was not an isolated building; it was part of a larger Jewish quarter with wineries, residences, a communal park, and clay pithos (large storage jars). The discovery underscores the integration and prominence of Jewish life in the multi-ethnic society of Phanagoria.

Artifacts and Evidence of Daily Life

One of the most intriguing finds is an amphora inscribed in Hebrew, believed to have been used by Jewish merchants known as Radchanites to transport kosher food. The discovery of manumission documents further highlights the social dynamics of the community, where freed slaves continued to contribute to the life of the synagogue.

Tombstones bearing Jewish symbols such as menorahs, shofars, and palm branches testify to the continued presence of Jews in the area. These findings suggest that the Jewish community of Phanagoria was one of the largest in the Mediterranean region at its peak.

Reviving ancient traditions

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Lazar of Krasnodar visited the site, bringing ancient traditions back to life. Blowing the shofar amid the ruins, he reflected on the resilience and adaptability of the Jewish community, emphasizing their commitment to religious practices while integrating into the local culture.

Founded around 543 BC, Phanagoria was a bustling center of commerce and culture. Its Jewish quarter exemplifies the fusion of local customs with Jewish traditions, offering valuable insight into the community’s ability to thrive in diverse environments.
