Lunar Trailblazer will go to the Moon to map water resources in detail

In 2025, the Lunar Trailblazer mission, a joint project of British and American scientists, will travel to the Moon to map the water resources on its surface in detail. It is scheduled to launch on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from the Florida launch site aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Origin of Water on the Moon

Traditionally, the Moon was thought to be a dry celestial body. However, recent studies have suggested the presence of water, especially in permanently closed craters at the poles. Possible sources of this water include comets and meteorites that brought it during collisions, or chemical reactions in the lunar crust that lead to the formation of water. Lunar Trailblazer will help to change the exact mechanisms of the appearance and distribution of water on the Moon.

The total budget for the Lunar Trailblazer mission is approximately US$55. The spacecraft is equipped with two main instruments: an infrared scanner to detect water and other geological features, as well as a thermal mapper developed by the University of Oxford to analyze the temperature characteristics of the surfaces in detail.

The mission is the result of a collaboration between scientists from the UK and the US. The launch will take place from the Cape Canaveral Spaceport in Florida using a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle.
