Turkey’s Methane Landfill Crisis Exposed by Satellites
Turkey’s landfill methane problem has become a major environmental warning just weeks before the country hosts COP31. New satellite observations have revealed exceptionally large methane emissions from waste sites around Istanbul and other Turkish cities, putting landfill pollution, climate policy and waste management under renewed scrutiny. The most striking discovery concerns the Silivri municipal landfill on the outskirts of Istanbul. According to an investigation published by The Guardian on October 5, 2026, satellite monitoring identified a huge methane plume above the site. Researchers associated with UCLA estimated an average emission rate of approximately 7.4 tonnes of methane per hour . That finding matters far beyond Turkey. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and large emissions from landfills can contribute significantly to near-term global warming. The discovery also demonstrates how modern satellite technology is changing environmental monitoring: pollution that ...
